Their mission completed, two Messerschmitt Bf 110-E’s of 5 Staffel, Zerstorergeschwader1 turn for home base on the Russian front, February 1942.
The symbol of a wasp was first conceived on the Bf 110 aircraft of II Gruppe, Zerstorergeschwader1 in the early months of WW2. It first started as three small wasps flying above a cloud. This developed into the larger more stylised “Wespen” carried in the Russian campaign and later Italy.
